AIHA has selected The Role of the Industrial Hygienist in a Pandemic, second edition, as the recipient of 2021 Critics’ Choice Award, while The Industrial Hygiene Reference and Study Guide, fourth edition, will be honored as the Association’s 2021 Bestseller. The editors of both Publications Award-winning books will be recognized during the virtual Mark of Excellence, May 16–25, 2022.
The Critics’ Choice Award honors publications that are noteworthy for their originality, impact on the occupational and environmental health and safety (OEHS) profession, and quality of work. In selecting Critics’ Choice winners, AIHA’s Content Portfolio Advisory Group (CPAG) evaluates all publications from the previous year. The Role of the Industrial Hygienist in a Pandemic, second edition, was edited by Roger D. Lewis, PhD, CIH, FAIHA, and Robert D. Strode, MS, CIH, FAIHA. This publication provides resources, information, and tools to advise and assist general workers, healthcare workers, and management on protecting workers during pandemics.
According to Silvia Maberti, Ph.D., chair of CPAG, “The second edition of The Role of the Industrial Hygienist in a Pandemic leverages real-world lessons developed from planning, preparation, and response actions to the H5N1 avian flu, the H1N1 swine flu, and the SARS-COV-2 pandemics.”
“This publication adds tremendous value by including new information and resources for OEHS practitioners,” Maberti added. “And it develops strong connections between the proposed pandemic response strategies and the AIHA Total Exposure Health and NIOSH Total Worker Health frameworks.”
The fourth edition of The Industrial Hygiene Reference and Study Guide was edited by Carter B. Ficklen III, CIH, CSP. This title sold 284 copies in 2021, making it AIHA’s Bestseller for last year, and is touted as the ultimate quick reference guide for OEHS professionals to use in day-to-day business. Considered an essential tool for OEHS students and those planning to take industry certification exams, this publication summarizes key information for all industrial hygiene rubrics, from toxicology and radiation to ventilation and noise.
