Missouri S&T names new endowed chair of chemical and biochemical engineering

Missouri University of Science and Technology’s Linda and Bipin Doshi Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering will soon have a new leader, with Dr. Ryan Gilbert set to start in the Doshi Endowed Chair role effective Aug. 1.

“When I first visited Missouri S&T, I was immediately impressed with the department’s strong foundation that has been developed by its dedicated faculty, staff, students and alumni,” says Gilbert. “I am excited to join the team and contribute to the continued success of S&T’s chemical and biochemical engineering efforts, while establishing our biomedical and bioengineering programs as among the best in the nation.”

Gilbert will come to Missouri S&T from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, New York, where he has been a member of the biomedical engineering faculty since 2010. He has also served as a research scientist for the Albany Stratton Veteran Affairs Medical Center for the past four years. Prior to joining RPI, he was a faculty member at Michigan Technological University for almost five years.

An expert in biomaterial development, Gilbert’s research focuses on scaffolds to promote tissue regeneration after injury. He studies spinal cord and peripheral nerve injuries, as well as how to improve electrode biocompatibility in the brain. To facilitate regeneration, materials developed in his laboratory provide topographical cues to regenerating cells and release drugs or genes to spur recovery.

He has published more than 80 peer-reviewed articles and secured more than $6 million in research funding as a principal investigator or co-principal investigator.

Gilbert earned a Ph.D. in biomedical engineering from Case Western Reserve University and a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from the University of Michigan – Ann Arbor. He is Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) and an editor-in-chief of Cells Tissues Organs — a journal focused on regenerative medicine and tissue engineering.

He will take over as chair from Dr. Hu Yang, who has served in that role since 2020.

“Dr. Yang has made great strides for the department, and I appreciated his work in launching the biomedical and bioengineering programs,” says Dr. David Borrok, vice provost and dean of S&T’s College of Engineering and Computing. “The department is in a prime position for growth, and I look forward to seeing Dr. Gilbert apply his expertise to help take it to new heights.”
